​FOO CHEE SAN(b.1928)

Born in 1928, Hainan, China, Foo is known to have works that depict the average day of ordinary people in Southeast Asia. Foo moved to Malaya at a young age and then to Singapore where he was trained by pioneer artists in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1953.

Afterwards, he attended Singapore Teachers’ Training College in 1956, a Certificate in Arts and Crafts from the Industrial; Art Institute in Tokyo, Japan, in 1963, and finally, a Diploma in Art Education at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, in 1984. 

 

Foo’s artistic career led to him being versatile in various mediums, such as Chinese Ink, lacquer, and woodblock printing. Foo became an art educator at the National Institute of Education in Singapore and taught at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts until he retired. 

 

Foo has received awards such as a Distinguished Service Medal from the Singapore Art Society in 1985 and the National Day Award in 1989. He also held several exhibitions in varying countries, allowing collectors from all around the world to to posses his works.
