Tong Chin Sye (b. 1939)

Tong Chin Sye (b.1939) is a second‑generation Singaporean multi‑media Nanyang‑style artist. A graduate of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), he later served as part‑time lecturer in Western Art at NAFA.
Working across watercolour, oil, Chinese ink, calligraphy and mixed media, he integrates expressive calligraphic brushwork with realist painting techniques. He paints en plein air from on‑site sketches rather than photographs. His subject matters focus on Singapore’s vanishing streetscapes, Singapore River, old shophouses and everyday folk life, capturing the transformation of the city.
He won the first prize in the PSA Open Art Competition in 1987, and represented Singapore at the Flemish Watercolour Days in Belgium in 1998. His works have been exhibited widely locally and internationally.
