林友权.png

Lim Yew Kuan is a second‑generation Nanyang artist in Singapore and the son of Lim Hak Tai, founder of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Born in Xiamen in 1928, he moved to Singapore during World War II. He graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1950 and pursued further studies at Chelsea School of Art in London, where he learned oil painting, copper‑plate engraving and lithography. As a founding member of the Equator Art Society, he advocated social realism and used woodcut prints to document grassroots life and urban transformation in post‑war Singapore. He served as Principal of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1963 to 1979 and devoted himself to art education. He was also skilled in sculpture and was commissioned by the Istana to create marble busts of Singapore’s first two presidents. He received the Public Service Medal in 1980 and the Cultural Medallion, Singapore’s highest arts honour, in 2011. Working across printmaking, oil painting and sculpture, his works are collected by the National Gallery Singapore and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
